Sensory escapes,
Capturing Distress through Light and Objects
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a condition where the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. I have experienced SPD but I only witnessed the true extent of how it affects lives when I became the mother of two neurodiverse kids.(Sensory processing issues tend to impact children the most, with as many as 1 in 6 kids having these challenges)
This project aims to visually explore the intense emotional and sensory experiences that children with SPD face. Through the use of photograms and solarization techniques created by placing objects directly on light-sensitive paper—I plan to create a series of intimate, personal visualizations of their feelings. The exposure to the light available at the time of printing ,the weather and all the different environmental factors will affect the paper just as the environmental stimulus affects people. These photograms will act as a way to document and make tangible the often-invisible challenges children encounter.
